What does an EduWings visit cost our school?

Accepted Answer

Nothing. The programme is delivered free to schools and funded entirely by sponsors, donors and the volunteer professionals who give their time. Where a school can contribute toward travel we welcome it, but it is never a condition of a visit.

How long does a visit take, and what do we need to provide?

A standard visit runs two to three hours and can be shaped around your timetable. We need a room that can hold the group, a power socket, and a wall or screen we can project onto. We bring everything else, including the simulators.

Which year groups is the programme for?

Accepted Answer

Grade 4 through Form 4. Every activity has an age band, and we adjust depth rather than swapping content — the physics of lift is the same at ten and at seventeen, but the conversation is not.

How does this connect to the curriculum?

Each module is mapped to CBC learning outcomes in Integrated Science, Mathematics, Pre-Technical Studies and Geography. Teachers receive the mapping in advance so the visit reinforces what you are already teaching rather than interrupting it.

How far will you travel?

Anywhere in Kenya. We deliberately prioritise schools with the least existing exposure to the aviation industry, which frequently means the ones furthest from an airport. Travel distance affects our scheduling, never our willingness.

Do I need excellent grades to work in aviation?

Accepted Answer

It depends entirely on which of the fourteen careers you mean, and this is the single biggest misconception we correct. Aircraft design requires strong Mathematics and Physics. Ground handling, cabin crew and aviation security have far more accessible entry requirements and clear routes upward. Every career page on this site states the actual requirement.

Is aviation training affordable?

Some routes are expensive and we will not pretend otherwise — a commercial pilot licence is a major investment. But a remote pilot licence takes weeks, ground handling certification is inexpensive, and an aircraft maintenance diploma costs less than many university degrees while leading to a globally portable licence. Cost varies enormously by pathway.

I am not strong at Mathematics. Is aviation closed to me?

No. Cabin crew, aviation security, airport commercial roles, ground operations and customer service are genuine aviation careers with real progression, and none of them are gated on advanced Mathematics. That said, if you want the flight deck or engineering, Mathematics is not negotiable — and it is more learnable than most students have been led to believe.

Are the salary figures on this site reliable?

They are indicative gross monthly ranges for the Kenyan market, gathered from industry contacts and published scales, and they move. Treat them as a guide to relative scale rather than a quotation. Allowances — particularly for crew and shift roles — can form a large share of actual take-home pay.

Is aviation a stable career for my child?

Aviation is cyclical and was hit hard by the pandemic. It is also structurally growing across Africa, and several of these careers — licensed engineering above all — hold internationally portable qualifications that are in persistent global shortage. We encourage families to look at the specific pathway rather than the industry as a whole.

How can my organisation get involved?

Three ways. Sponsor school visits, which is the most direct form of support. Open your facility for a student visit — an airport, a hangar or a control tower is worth any number of slide decks. Or release staff to volunteer as session leaders. The last one costs the least and, honestly, changes the most.

How do you measure whether this works?

Accepted Answer

We survey students before and after each visit on how many aviation careers they can name and whether they believe those careers are open to them. We track requests for follow-up, and we keep in contact with students who go on to aviation training. Our published figures come from those records.

Do you work with schools outside Kenya?

Accepted Answer

Not yet. The curriculum is mapped to the Kenyan CBC framework and the career pathways reference KCAA licensing, so it would need real adaptation to travel well. We would rather do this properly for Kenya first.

How do I volunteer?

If you work in aviation in any capacity, we want to hear from you. Most volunteers give two to four days a year. You do not need teaching experience — students are far more interested in what you actually do than in how polished you are while describing it.
